MARINE
PHARMACOLOGY
CENTER

The Interdepartmental Marine Pharmacology Center was born from the collaboration between the Department of Pharmacy, Department of Biology, Department of Agricultural, Food and Environmental Sciences, Department of Earth Sciences, and Department of Veterinary Sciences of the University of Pisa, with the aim of studying marine biodiversity in search of new molecules and bioactive extracts with applications in the pharmacological, nutraceutical and cosmetic fields.

Marine biodiversity, much richer than terrestrial biodiversity, encompasses an extraordinary variety of organisms and habitats, generating a unique chemodiversity. This immense biological heritage, largely still unexplored, represents an inexhaustible source of extracts and bioactive molecules with significant pharmacological potential. Italy, with its vast coastal strip, offers a privileged context for research in this sector, creating concrete opportunities for the development of new scientific and biotechnological applications.

The Center was established in 2018 upon the proposal of Professor Paola Nieri (Department of Pharmacy, UNIPI, who directed it until 2024) and Professor Graziano Di Giuseppe (Department of Biology, UNIPI deputy director until 2024). Currently, it is directed by Professor Lara Testai (Department of Pharmacy, UNIPI), who coordinates its activities together with the deputy director (Prof. Roberta Moschini, Department of Biology, UNIPI) and the Board with an integrated and cutting-edge vision. In fact, the Center represents a center of excellence in the Italian scientific panorama, promoting an interdisciplinary study approach that brings together different skills in a highly innovative research environment.
